Mapping of Coastal and Benthic Marine Habitats in Croatia

Client: Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development | 2021-2023

This national-scale project aimed to systematically map coastal and benthic marine habitats across the Republic of Croatia's marine territory—including the territorial sea, coastal waters, and the Exclusive Economic Zone. The resulting habitat map, covering over 30,000 km², provides a critical foundation for biodiversity protection, marine spatial planning, and compliance with the EU Habitats Directive and Marine Strategy Framework Directive.

SCIOM d.o.o. participated as a subcontractor, contributing expertise in spatial data harmonization and integration, habitat type modelling using deep learning techniques, and advanced data analysis. These efforts supported the development of a comprehensive spatial database covering 51% of the Croatian marine area, integrating field data from more than 4,000 transects with acoustic, satellite, and aerial remote sensing.

The project outcomes are accessible via the Bioportal GIS platform, providing open access to habitat data for research, planning, and policy support.
